About This Tour
This is a private, full day, driver-guided tour. Your guide will pick you up and drop you off at your Edinburgh accommodation with their vehicle.
After departing Edinburgh we head towards Stirling, a medieval market town situated on the river Forth. Our first stop is Stirling Castle. Sitting atop a volcanic outcrop, this magnificent castle boasts a rich history intertwined with Scotland’s story featuring the likes of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. With Stirling the preferred residence for many of Scotland’s medieval monarchs, the castle is home to several striking medieval royal buildings, including the Great Hall, Royal Palace, and Chapel Royal.
We then take a short drive to our next destination, the National Wallace Monument. Although visible from Stirling Castle, this 67-metre (220 ft) tower needs to be experienced in person to appreciate its true grandeur. The monument was completed in 1869 to commemorate Sir William Wallace, legendary Scottish patriot, national hero, and more recently the subject of Mel Gibson’s 1995 film Braveheart.
A very narrow spiral staircase of 246 stairs leads to the viewing gallery at the top of the monument which provides fantastic views of Stirling, the Ochil hills, and beyond. On the way up we can discover all about Wallace, the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge, and other Scottish heroes. After visiting the monument we stop for lunch in Stirling.
After lunch we make our way to Callander, a small town on the banks of the river Teith. After a brief stop here we continue on to the village of Aberfoyle, stopping on the way to take in several scenic viewpoints as well as Loch Venachar and Loch Katrine.
Once in Aberfoyle we explore the village and several local shops before enjoying a sheepdog demonstration at the Scottish Wool Centre. From Aberfoyle we then begin our journey back eastward to Edinburgh, via the larges equine sculptures in the world. Standing at 30 metres (98 feet) tall, The Kelpies depict shape-shifting aquatic spirits of Scottish legends. Kelpies were said to haunt rivers and streams, usually in the shape of a horse.
After the Kelpies we return to Edinburgh where our tour ends.
