About This Tour
This is a private, full day, shore excursion. This tour can also be booked as a driver-guided tour. Your guide will pick you up and drop you off at Hatston Pier or your Kirkwall accommodation with their vehicle.
From our starting point in Kirkwall, we will drive to the windswept west coast of Orkney mainland.
Our route will take us via Scapa Flow, a sheltered natural bay with a dramatic coastline. This world-renowned diving destination hides a wealth of military history in its shallow waters, including an entire fleet of wrecked and scuttled German ships from the First World War. Our drive past this shipwreck graveyard – the biggest in Europe – will give us an opportunity to hear more about its fascinating maritime history.
We then arrive at our first stop: Yesnaby Cliffs, a truly wild slice of nature. Here we will have the opportunity to brave the elements for views of striking red sandstone cliffs and rocky sea stacks plunging into the tempestuous ocean below.
We next stop at the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae. Getting out of our vehicle, we will step back in time at least five thousand years. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this well-preserved ancient village is older than the pyramids and offers a fascinating and hands-on opportunity to explore the dwelling places and lives of prehistoric peoples.
Continuing the Neolithic theme, we drive on to the Ring of Brodgar. Exploring this ancient stone circle, we will hear more about Orkney’s mysterious prehistoric past, rituals, and secrets. We will also visit the nearby Standing Stones of Stenness, which at around 5000 years old are even a millennium older than Stonehenge.
After a lunch break we will drive to Churchill Barriers, originally built as naval defences during the Second World War. We will stop to visit a beautiful Italian Chapel, discovering how it was built by Italian prisoners of war kept on the island.
Our final stop is Kirkwall, Orkney’s main town, where we will explore the streets and delve deeper into the Norse heritage of the islands. We will visit the “Light of the North”, the remarkable Magnus Cathedral founded 850 years ago by the Viking Earl Rognval.
After exploring Kirkwall, we wrap up and finish our tour by returning to port. Alternatively your guide can also drop you off in Kirkwall.
