About This Tour
This is a private, full day, driver-guided tour. Your guide will pick you up and drop you off at your Glasgow accommodation with their vehicle.
Tour Itinerary
We depart Glasgow and drive towards Scotland’s famous Highlands. Our scenic route takes us through the beautiful Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the dramatic Rest and Be Thankful pass. We will stop briefly to take in views at the top of the pass, the summit of an old military road where weary soldiers of the past stopped to catch their breath.
Next we arrive in the town of Inverary on the shores of Loch Fyne. Here we will visit Inverary Castle, the impressive seat of the Duke of Argyll and the Campbell clan. This magnificent aristocratic residence, which has featured in the Downton Abbey TV series, was completely rebuilt by the 3rd Duke of Argyll in the 1700s. The result is a fairy-tale Georgian mansion worthy of royalty, as demonstrated in 1871 when the 8th Duke’s son and heir married the Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria. Exploring the exquisite rooms of the castle, which is still home to the current Duke, we will discover the history and legacy of one of Scotland’s most influential families.
We will also explore the delightful town of Inverary itself, taking in its fine examples of Scottish Georgian architecture.
After a lunch break, we head deeper into the Highlands, where we stop at a viewpoint on the banks of Loch Awe to behold the dramatic Kilchurn Castle. Rising over the brooding waters of the loch and framed by rugged mountains, this ancient, deserted fortress is one you will definitely want to capture on camera.
We drive on towards Loch Lomond, passing the picturesque town of Tarbet snuggled between Loch Lomond and Loch Long. We arrive at Luss, a postcard perfect little village on the beautiful western shore of Loch Lomond. Here we stop to wander around the charming streets and rows of cottages, and pop by the visitor centre. We will then make our way to Luss Pier, where we will be able to take in sweeping, panoramic views over the glittering waters and bonny banks of Loch Lomond.
We then return to Glasgow and finish our tour.
